INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
Joseph Jeune
From the Brink of Death
When Joseph Jeune was admitted to the Lascahobas clinic in Haiti's lower Central Plateau, he had given up on himself, on life. He and his family were resigned to his imminent yet untimely death. Joseph was only 26 years old, but the family had already bought Joseph's coffin.
Countless visits to other clinics could not explain his weight loss and constant fevers. In March 2003, the staff at the Lascahobas clinic diagnosed him with HIV and tuberculosis co-infections. Dr. David Walton immediately began Joseph on antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS, as well as treatment for tuberculosis. Within two months, Joseph gradually beat the infections, and the funeral preparations stopped. He has gained nearly 39 pounds, has recovered the strength to resume farming, and even has spare energy to shine shoes at the local market.
Speaking about the power of medical treatment, Joseph says, "These medications have brought me back from the brink of death... I feel as good now as I have in years."
